I’ve always looked at entrepreneurship as a journey. At times it can be difficult and even frustrating. When things don’t turn out the way you expect, it’s easy to lose your focus and motivation.
Several years ago I started a ritual of taking the day off on my birthday so that I could reflect on the previous 364 days. This period of thoughtful reflection, helps me to identify what worked and what didn’t before I set goals for the year. Here are my tips for staying focused and motivated in 2010:
Define a Single Major Goal and Set a Deadline
How many times have you started a new project only to get sidetracked by another one? Before you know it, you’re overwhelmed and neither project is moving forward. Decide what you want to accomplish, commit to a deadline and take action now.
Eliminate Unnecessary Work
“Our life is frittered away by detail. Simplify, simplify, simplify.” Henry David Thoreau.
Begin with the end in mind. Map out the steps to your goal as simply as possible. If it’s not essential to achieving your goal, don’t do it! By defining clear, concise steps, achieving your goal will seem less daunting.
Measure Your Results
What gets measured, gets managed. Measuring your results will help you stay on track. Without measurements, you are more likely to lose focus and interest.
Mentally Prepare for Setbacks
When you start something new, it’s fun and exciting, but setbacks are bound to happen, and your enthusiasm may wane. If you prepare yourself mentally for potential setbacks, you’ll be able to persevere through any challenges that arise. Try to remain flexible and change course if necessary… success is usually on the other side of every challenge.
Enjoy the Journey
Have fun with each new project. Celebrate small successes along the way and invest your positive energy in the present moment.
