Spelman College, a historically black college for women located in Atlanta, Georgia, was ranked No. 16 in the nation on the StudentAdvisor.com Top 100 Social Media Colleges list. Spelman was one of only two Georgia colleges featured on the list, with the University of Georgia coming in at a distant No. 100.
Mark Zuckerberg’s alma mater, Harvard, finished first (no surprise there), followed by Johns Hopkins, United States Military Academy, Carnegie Mellon and Notre Dame. But what’s interesting is that Spelman outranked half of the Ivy League colleges including Duke, Brown, Yale and Dartmouth!
Dean Tsouvalas, editor-in-chief states “All these colleges are showing how it’s done in social media – They get it” StudentAdvisor.com’s Top Social Media Colleges ranking compares more than 6,000 colleges and universities and post-secondary schools in the United States in terms of their mastery of public social media methods, tools and websites. Their research team collects information on how active and effective each school is at engaging their audiences on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and other social media tools, such as iTunes and podcasts, and publishes their ranking each month.
Spelman has a longstanding history of “showing how it’s done” when it comes to student and community engagement. Last year the students participated in a letter writing and video campaign to invite First Lady, Michelle Obama to be their commencement speaker for 2011. Well it must have paid off because on March 25, 2011, Spelman announced that the First Lady will be the 2011 commencement spearker. Way to go Spelman!
