Several months ago my sister, Jennifer attended a seminar hosted by her pastor, and Women of Destiny founder, Dr. Lisa M. Tait. One of the presenters was a very talented Christian fiction writer named Sherri Lewis.
My sister gave me an autographed copy of her book, The List, which is a story about five friends Michelle, Lisa, Angela, Nicole and Vanessa, who are over 30, career-minded, Christian and single. But with work and church filling most of their time, the likelihood of meeting “Mr. Right” seemed bleak.
Michelle, a successful television producer, is a divorcee with no kids. After she turns 35, she begins to hear the proverbial “tick-tock” of her “biological clock” and wonders if she’ll ever find her soul-mate.
Lisa, a former model turned fashion magazine editor is 38. She has been single and celibate for nine years. But she is confident that she’ll find the “One.”
Angela is super smart, works in a lab and at 41 is still a virgin. She’s pretty, but lacks confidence… and as the “quiet one ” of the group, her character evolves in a surprising way.
Nicole is the classic independent woman, who is also described as being “Halle Berry” gorgeous. But after years of failed relationships, she’s extremely jaded. Having a man in her life is the furthest thing from her mind.
Vanessa, a therapist is the “rock” of the group. She is a widow raising two teenagers and plays the role as a mother figure to the other women. While still quietly morning the loss of her husband, Michael. She offers advice on how the ladies can find their heart’s desires.
This heartwarming romantic tale takes place in Atlanta, Georgia and is told from Michelle’s perspective. Michelle, Lisa and Angela each make a list that describes their ideal soul-mate and embark on a sometimes comedic journey to “be found” by their future husbands in the age of internet dating.
Lewis takes a refreshing and honest look at the challenges faced by many black women who are Christian, single and choose to date. The main characters are well developed and believable; and Lewis’ writing flows effortlessly from chapter to chapter, making it a quick and easy read.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It made me laugh out loud and touched my heart all at the same time. If you’re a fan of Christian fiction, this is a great book to add to your collection.
